The short answer
ETIAS is expected to start operations in the last quarter of 2026. Travellers do not need to apply right now, but visa-free visitors should prepare because airlines and carriers will check travel authorisation when the system goes live.
Best move: check your passport validity now, avoid unofficial paid sites, and save the official EU ETIAS page before booking future Europe trips.
Traveller checklist before you book
- Check passport timing: ETIAS guidance says your travel document should usually be valid for more than three months after planned departure and should not be older than 10 years.
- Use official channels: apply through the official ETIAS website or official mobile app when applications open.
- Apply before buying tight tickets: most applications may process quickly, but extra checks can add days or weeks.
- Keep email access: the email used in the application is where ETIAS communication and updates are sent.
Who needs ETIAS?
ETIAS is for travellers who do not need a visa for short stays in the European countries that require ETIAS. That includes many visitors from visa-exempt countries who travel for tourism, business meetings, transit or other short-stay reasons.
The official EU ETIAS page says 30 European countries will require ETIAS. The list includes popular destinations such as France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Portugal, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway and others. Always check your nationality and travel document before relying on a general list.
| Traveller situation | Likely ETIAS action |
|---|---|
| Visa-exempt tourist planning a short Europe trip after ETIAS starts | Check ETIAS requirement and apply before travel. |
| Traveller who already needs a Schengen visa | ETIAS is not a replacement for a visa. |
| Family travelling together | Each traveller needs their own authorisation. There is no group application. |
| New passport after approval | Apply again because ETIAS is linked to the travel document. |
Cost, validity and processing time
The official ETIAS FAQ lists the application fee as EUR 20. Applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt from this payment, and some family-member cases can also be exempt under EU rules.
An ETIAS travel authorisation is valid for three years or until the travel document used in the application expires, whichever comes first. It allows travel to countries requiring ETIAS, but it does not guarantee entry: border guards still make the final border decision.
Common mistakes to avoid
Official ETIAS costs EUR 20. Extra charges from intermediaries are separate from the EU fee.
The authorisation is linked to the travel document used in the application.
ETIAS is travel authorisation. EES is the border entry/exit registration system.
ETIAS vs EES
ETIAS and EES are connected to European border management, but they are not the same. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation for eligible visa-exempt travellers. EES records entries, exits and refusals at external borders for short-stay non-EU travellers.
FAQ
Can I apply for ETIAS now? No. ETIAS is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026, and the EU says travellers do not need to take action at this point.
Will ETIAS guarantee entry into Europe? No. A valid ETIAS lets you travel to countries requiring ETIAS, but border authorities decide entry at the border.
Should I print ETIAS? The official FAQ says carriers and border guards can access the authorisation in the system, but travellers may carry a printout for convenience.
